Having something to look forward to, no matter how small, reduces stress and boosts mood.  Humans are extremely future-oriented and have the unique ability to set goals and envision how to get there and how it will feel when they do. Actively imagining, and looking forward to our best life creates more optimism.

Positive anticipation is a powerful motivator. Hope and optimism motivates us to work towards the goal or experience that we’ve planned. It gives us a sense of meaning, purpose and tells us we are on the right path.

Uncertainty is stressful, but planning for the future offers a sense of control. The power of now and savoring the moment is important, but as Andy Warhol put it simply: “The idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting.”

 Goal setting is a powerful technique that provides direction.
